When you book a family photoshoot, you naturally want everything to go perfectly. You imagine capturing those beautiful, smiling faces in timeless images that you’ll treasure for years to come. But if you’ve ever tried to get a tired, cranky baby or toddler to sit still and smile for the camera, you know that a well-rested child can make all the difference. In this blog, I’ll explore the connection between sleep and happy family photos, and share some tips on how to prepare your little ones for the big day.
THE IMPACT OF SLEEP ON MOOD AND BEHAVIOUR
We all know that sleep is vital for everyone, but it’s particularly crucial for babies and young children. A good night’s sleep helps to regulate their mood, improves their ability to handle new situations, and reduces the likelihood of meltdowns. When children are well-rested, they’re more likely to be cooperative, cheerful, and engaged, making the whole experience far more enjoyable for everyone involved. Sleep also plays a role in emotional regulation; a child who’s had enough sleep will find it easier to manage their emotions, leading to more genuine smiles and less frustration. A happy child equals happy photos, and sleep is a key ingredient in that equation.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
The timing of the photoshoot can make or break the experience. Try to schedule the session at a time when your child is usually well-rested and in a good mood—typically mid-morning or after a nap. If possible, avoid scheduling the shoot during a time when your child is usually tired, such as right before naptime or bedtime. This way, you’re more likely to have a happy, alert child who’s ready to pose for the camera.
STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE
As much as possible, stick to your child’s regular sleep routine leading up to the photoshoot. Consistency is key when it comes to sleep, so try to maintain your usual nap schedule. A sudden change in routine can throw off your child’s sleep, leading to a grumpy, overtired little one on the day of the shoot. If your child is well-rested, they’ll be more relaxed and cooperative, making the photographer’s job easier and the photos more likely to turn out beautifully.
THE POWER OF A PRE-PHOTSHOOT NAP
If your child usually naps during the time the photoshoot is scheduled, consider moving the nap slightly earlier to ensure they get some rest beforehand. Even a short nap can make a big difference in your child’s mood and energy levels. A well-timed nap can mean the difference between a cheerful, smiley child and a fussy, uncooperative one. If you are travelling to a location for your photoshoot a nap in the car or buggy can be a great way to ensure they’re happy during the session.
IF SLEEP DOESN’T GO TO PLAN
In the end you can plan everything to perfection, but every parent knows that our babies rarely follow our plans. If your baby or child hasn’t slept as well as you would have liked, don’t panic. Our children mimic our emotions and if you are relaxed and happy it is more likely they will be too, even if they are running on less sleep than you would like.
Working on your baby’s sleep so that they are consistently sleeping well is the best way to ensure big events like photoshoots aren’t derailed by a sleepy baby. So here are my top tips to improve your baby’s sleep.
ESTABLISH A BEDTIME ROUTINE
A consistent bedtime routine is key to helping your child wind down and sleep better. Simple activities like a warm bath, a bedtime story, and some quiet time can make a big difference. Following the same routine every night helps your child relax and settle into sleep more easily.
CREATE A SLEEP-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT
Ensure your child’s sleep environment is quiet, dark, and comfortable. Blackout curtains and white noise machines can help create a calming space that promotes better sleep. A restful sleep environment means your child is more likely to wake up refreshed and ready for the photoshoot.
CONSIDER SLEEP TRAINING
If your child has trouble sleeping, gentle sleep training can help them learn to fall asleep independently and stay asleep longer. This can lead to more consistent sleep, ensuring your child is well-rested and in a good mood for the big day.
