What to Wear for a Bluebell Mini Session in the Woods

Deciding what to wear for your bluebell mini session can feel like a challenge, but with a little planning, you’ll have a beautifully coordinated look that enhances your photos rather than distracting from them. The key is to complement the natural setting, keep things comfortable, and most importantly—feel like yourselves!

Colours that Work Best

The star of the show (besides your family, of course!) is the sea of bluebells, so we want to choose colours that work in harmony with them rather than compete for attention.

  • Soft Neutrals & Earthy Tones – Think creams, oatmeals, and beiges. These colours blend beautifully with the soft woodland setting.

  • Blues & Purples – Denim is always a win: dresses, dungarees, shirts, and jackets all work well. Dusky blues and soft purples tie in effortlessly with the bluebells.

  • Muted Pastels – A touch of soft pink, lavender, sage, or pastel yellow can add warmth and dimension without being overpowering.

  • Rich Neutrals (if you prefer darker tones) – Navy, deep greys, and warm browns work well, but avoid black as it can absorb light and look harsh against the soft spring backdrop.

Patterns & Textures

Patterns can work if chosen wisely! Subtle floral prints or delicate stripes can add interest without overwhelming the image. Avoid anything too bold, as busy patterns can distract from the overall scene. Instead, focus on texture – knits, linen, corduroy, and soft layers add beautiful depth to your images.

The Power of Layers

Spring in the woods can be unpredictable! Light layers will not only keep you warm but also add a lovely visual element to your outfit choices. Cardigans, shawls, and cosy knits all work well. For little ones, layering a denim jacket or a fine-knit jumper over a dress or top gives a timeless and practical look.

Footwear – Keeping It Practical

Bluebell woods can be muddy! Wellies are a great option, and a pop of colour in your wellies can be fun for kids. Sturdy walking boots or neutral ankle boots also work well. Avoid white trainers (mud will find them!) and anything too formal – comfort is key.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • No Logos or Characters – Your little one may adore their Paw Patrol t-shirt, but trust me, it’ll be all you see in your final images!

  • Too Much Bold Colour – Bright reds, oranges, and neon colours can clash with the natural tones and draw the eye away from your family’s connection.

  • White Clothing – Cream and off-white are perfect, but stark white can feel too bright and out of place in the woodland setting.

  • Overly Formal Attire – This is a relaxed, playful session! Avoid anything too stiff or restrictive.

Final thoughts

The most important thing? Be comfortable and be yourselves! Your photos should reflect your family’s personality, so choose outfits that feel like “you” while working harmoniously with the setting. And if you need any last-minute advice, I’m always happy to help!
